صوت المرأة ثورة |Women’s voices are revolutionary tote bag

Screen printed on fabric. The text on the print translates to “A woman’s voice is revolution” or “ A woman’s voice is revolutionary”. It comes from a known feminist proverb by Ghada Amer who challenged the well-known Arabic proverb “A Woman’s Voice is shameful.” By strategically changing just one letter in that proverb, Ghada Amer subverts its message and erases the shame associated with women’s voices.  She transformed that shame into an empowering feminist slogan, one that she saw displayed and repeated everywhere during the 2011 Arab Spring. This artwork was made with the intention of amplifying all the Palestinian women who are a critical part in this movement for the freedom and justice for all of Palestine, and without the work and voices of Palestinian women, we wouldn’t be where we are today. The motif accompanied with this slogan are flowers or Azhar in Arabic. The motifs' origin can be traced back to Ramallah. Signifying yet again the influence of Arab feminism in Palestine.
